a very warm welcome to dress up, a tech girl’s guide to dressing well.
i'm galaxia and i’m a product designer. i love fashion, something difficult to come by in the tech offices where i spend most of my time. i’ve tried to maintain a strong sense of style, and i put a lot of effort into my outfits despite this environment — this newsletter is a guide on how to do the same, and why you’ll be so much better for it.
♡ what is dressing up?
besides just putting on clothes, dressing up is personal self-expression and visual storytelling.
what types of outfits come to mind when you imagine a tech office — maybe even the one you work at? most people probably imagine corporate t-shirts, sweatpants, and patagonia fleece jackets.
what story are these outfits telling? is that the way you want to express yourself? (it’s okay if yes.) i believe thoughtful outfits are good outfits; as long as it makes you look and feel the way you want to, that seems successful to me.
for me, dressing up makes me feel comfortable and gives me a good conversation starter. i’ve met a lot of fashion-minded friends in offices from conversations that started with “where did you get your skirt?” or “i love your shoes!”
i’ve worked at tech companies big and small, from toronto to los angeles to new york. in all of these, i’ve noticed two main groups:
people who don’t care about how they dress, and don’t want to; and
people who want to care about how they dress, but they don’t know how.
dress up is for those of you in the second group who want to recognize your sense of style and see the joy in dressing up.
some topics we might explore together are:
shopping effectively — i.e. building a ‘uniform’, cost per wear;
building confidence and overcoming the fear of standing out in the generally conformist world of tech;
my thoughts on emerging styles and ruminations on fashion itself;
and please let me know what specifically you would like to read about!
dressing up is a mindset — whether you think you can or you can’t, you’re right!
